Intel Security Manager Steve Lund calls me to schedule a meeting at the Buenos Aires Sheraton for Sunday, May 14, 1995. He wants to know what happened to Intel technology and the role the American agencies played in the entire ordeal.

Intel Security Manager Steve Lund travels to Buenos Aires and we meet at the Sheraton Hotel lobby on May 14, 1995. Essentially, he wants to know what happened to Intel technology and what the role of the agencies was. A photographer takes a shot of us talking. This pic ends up in the Clarin newspaper a week later.
El Jefe de Seguridad de Intel, Steve Lund viaja a Buenos Aires y nos reunimos en el lobby del Hotel Sheraton. Esencialmente quiere saber que paso con la tecnologia de Intel y cual fue el rol de las agencias norteamericanas. Un fotografo nos saca una foto. Bill: Hola?
Bill: Static?
Grant: Uh, but it seems like it’s ok now.
Bill: Uh huh.
Grant: How you doin’?
Bill: I’m pretty good, how ‘bout you?
Grant: Good, do you have any more in thought to our telephone conversation the other day?
Bill: Uh yeah, I mean, you know, I have no problem with uh, what I said the other day.
Grant: Uh huh. Can you tell me anything that happened in your conversation with Steve Lund when he was down there?
Bill: No, not over the phone I won’t.
Grant: Ok, is there any problem for you in what grew out of that conversation?
Bill: Again you know uh, I’d rather not talk about that at all.
Grant: Ok. Well, what I’m concerned about is any possible situation that would influence your coming here.
Bill: Uh huh. No. I don’t see any problem at all.
Grant: Ok. Uh, you know the situation is not real simple, there are a few complications.
Bill: Uh huh.
Grant: For instance, let me tell you the one that I think that uh is, um uh, of a little bit of interest right now. Ok.
Bill: Uh huh.
Grant: You sent some stuff by mail, or you had it shipped some how to
Bill: And, what happened.
Grant: Well, you recall that right?
Bill: Well I don’t know.
Grant: Well, but, but, I guess what I’m, I guess what I’m saying is kind of a question. I don’t know if you shipped it or mailed it, you sent it up there. This causes some interest to the
Bill: Ok, that’s clear.
Grant: Ok uh, frankly at this point, people are still thinking and discussing, uh, so I don’t know what would be the best thing to suggest to you. Uh I could tell you personally at this point, as far as I know, I would tell you otherwise if it were so, there is no problem with you coming up here, but that could change too.
Bill: Uh huh. I’m aware, I’m aware of that.
Grant: What, what, what is your inclination now, is the best thing you should, you should do?
Bill: Well I would like to sit down and talk.
Grant: Ok, with Jim and me or what?
Bill: Yeah, primarily.
Grant: Ok, where?
Bill: At my house, I mean, it could be anywhere.
Grant: How ‘bout delaying your coming here ‘till the next week? The 13th or the 14th.
Bill: Um, well I could do that as well, uh, I don’t know if that’s possible, but yeah we could do that as well, I mean, I don’t know, it doesn’t really matter that much.
Grant: Ok, because, I would like to be here when you get here to help you protect your interests you know what I mean.
Bill: Ok.
Grant: The 8th or the 9th I will not be here.
Bill: Uh huh.
Grant: Ok, so anytime the next week would be Ok, like the 15th or the 16th.
Bill: I see. Ok, we could arrange that.
Grant: Ok, but I would like to have it coordinated with your coming so I can be here when you actually, when you actually get here you know uh. I know you want to have some control over that, but I’d like to be here when you get here so that I can extend any interests, help protecting in your interests.
Bill: I don’t have a problem with that at all. Ok.
Grant: Now, are you under some kind of surveillance down.
Bill: Uh, I’m not sure. I think I am.
Grant: Ok uh, my people hired by some of these people maybe.
Bill: I’m not sure. Again I’m not sure.
Grant: Ok

Grant: Billy!
Bill: Oh! Que tal, como andas, buenos dias!
Grant: Bien, como estas... como estas tu? Puedes oirme bien?
Bill: Si, si puedo.
Grant: Ah bien, oi un poco de estatica en la linea.

Grant: Ah, pero parece que todo se oye bien ahora. Como andas?
Bill: Yo estoy bien, que tal tu?
Grant: Bien, has pensado un poco en nuestra conversacion telefonica el otro dia?
Bill: Si, no tengo ningun problema con lo que dije el otro dia.
Grant: Aja. ...puedes decirme algo de lo que hablaste con Steve Lund cuando el estuvo alla?
Bill: nnnno, por telefono si que no lo hare!
Grant: ...hay algun problema para ti, lo que salio de esa conversacion?
Bill: Una ves mas, preferiria no hablar de eso de ninguna manera.
Grant: Ya veo. Ves, lo que me preocupa es alguna posible situacion que podria influenciarte en volver aqui.
Bill: No, no. No veo ningun problema. Ninguno.
Grant: La situacion no es simple, hay algunas complicaciones, por ejemplo dejame decirte el problema que te puede interesar un poco. Bien?
Bill: Aja.
Grant: Y eso es que tu enviaste por correo, o lo trasladaste a Santa Clara.
Bill: Y... y que paso?
Grant: Bueno, tu te acuerdas, no es asi?
Bill: No se.
Grant: Pero, pero supongo que es una clase de pregunta, pero tu enviaste o trasladaste
pero lo enviaste de alguna manera, esto causa unos intereses con el United States Attourney
de San Jose, California que concierne la accion que hiso que hicieras eso. La gente con la cual estoy hablando me han pedido advertirte que hay interes de su parte, aunque no ha llegado a una decision sobre que piensa hacer, y en un esfuerso para ser justos, querian que yo te lo mencionara, estamos claros?
Bill: Estamos claros.
Grant: Francamente todavia estamos discutiendo, y no se que recomendarte. Puedo decirte, en este momento, hasta donde yo se, te diria de otra manera si fuera asi, que no hay ningun problema con que vuelvas, pero eso puede cambiar tambien.
Bill: Aja. Estoy alertado.
Grant: Muy bien, cual es tu inclinacion, que opinas, que es lo que crees que debes hacer?
Bill: Bueno, quiero sentarme y hablar.
Grant: Que, con Jim y conmigo?
Bill: Exactamente.
Grant: Muy bien, donde?
Bill: En mi casa... supongo que puede ser en cualquier parte.
Grant: Que tal si esperas hasta la siguiente semana para venir? El 13 o el 14?
Bill: Eh... puedo hacer eso, no se... si, podriamos hacer eso, supongo, no se. No importa
tanto.
Grant: Lo digo porque me gustaria estar aca cuando vengas, y quiero ayudarte a proteger tus intereses sabes lo que digo?
Bill: Muy bien.
Grant: Y el 8 y el 9 no estare aqui,
Bill: Aja.
Grant: Pero cualquier dia despues, si puedo, por ejemplo el 15 o el 16.
Bill: Ya veo. Muy bien. Podemos hacer eso.
Grant: Pero quiero coordinarlo para estar ahi exactamente en el momento que. en el momento que llegas, se que quieres controlar esto un poco, pero quiero estar ahi para extender cualquier interes... tu sabes, ayudar a proteger tus intereses, protegiendo tus intereses.
Bill: Muy bien, no tengo ningun problema con eso para nada.
Grant: Bien, Estas bajo alguna clase de vigilancia alla?
Bill: No estoy seguro, creo que si lo estoy.
Grant: Bien, por gente que trabaja para alguna de esta gente, puede ser?

Grant arranges to meet me after I warn him that the FBI may also be dragged into court. I suggest that it is better if we analyze things I discussed with Lund in more detail BEFORE things get out of hand. Grant suggests Mexico City.

Bill: Well but, I guess I still don't have an answer on what I am saying here, you're saying that all parties will not be dragged in?
Grant: Correct.
Bill: Aha, It's hard for me to believe that.
Grant: What you're referring to, I think it's pretty clear to me what you're referring to, ok? There is zero relationship between that, and what I am talking about in Santa
Clara
Bill: But that could escalate.
Grant: but um... there's no relationship between that and what you're talking about, unless there's something that you haven't told me that there is that shows some relationship.
Bill: There is. There is, uh. Let me just say the following, you asked me a question the other day and I am going to try to answer it as best as possible. Uh, Steve Lund did come down here.
Grant: Correct.
Bill: We had a talk, and I have also been called by Mr. Costner.
Grant: Aha.
Bill: and from what I gathered from our conversations, my conversations with both of them, is that they are interested in something bigger. Now this is maybe my impression but there were a lot of questions relating to your organizations.
Grant: yeah they, ah. Their interest was whether or not we told you to do what you did at their organizations, right?
Bill: what? I think it's more than that, I think there is another issue overall. Especially concerning Mr. Lund's organization. What he said at the time was that the way they looked at it, while I was under supervision, I ended up in their company, and regardless of whether it was deliberate or not, there was the issue of negligence.
Now that's the best way I can put it.
Grant: Oh ok, yeah yeah I gotcha, listen Billy, We're not concerned about that and i'll tell you why. They claimed that we didn't tell em' about you, remember you put down your prior employment under your aplication, remember?
Bill: Aha.
Grant: Well, you told em' right up front!
Bill: Yeah, all that's fine, but then you know, things happened while I was in there.
Grant: You mean, you're kinda looking out for US, right? You're trying to warn me, right?
BIll: I'm trying to warn you because you know, I don't know, again I come back to my first question, is it in your interests that I go down there? If it is, I've no problem, I just want you to know that this could escalate.
Uh the other issue is, will there be any police action when you meet me?
Grant: Uh, I don't know what AMD and Intel have done. Ok?
Bill: Aha.
Grant: As far... because you know the way they're acting. Ok? you know? They're not telling us. ok? So I have no idea if there is anything they've initiated.

Bill: Which one?
Grant: With Lund?
Bill: Uhh... ha ha I'll take the 5th on that one!
Grant: Well if you did, bring a copy of it.
Bill: you don't trust me anymore! ha ha!
Grant: no, I do trust you, ok? I do trust you, and I know that you probably did record it, ok?
Bill: you're saying that you know, I put it on my application and that's fine, but by the time you folks told Intel, er, you know, several months have passed. I was in there without their...
Grant: Oh no no
Bill: Without their knowledge...
Grant: That's not correct. We told them right after you got the job.
Bill: aja you see, the question there is also the issue of forewarning not only for them but for me, that's another issue that came up.
Grant: Forewarning for you I don't understand that.
Bill: That I was forewarned of an impending investigation and the circulation of my name.
Grant: You know that's not true. We never told you about any investigation.
Bill: But that IS true. It is true I mean I was warned, I knew about, you know, that they would keep an eye on me, and they're upset about that. I
just don't know if the best course is for me to come up there or maybe have some kind of a meeting here, first, I dunno. This is up to you. You folks might want to decide to come down here and have a preliminary meeting, because of... you know, I don't want things to get out of hand, and not be able to stop it. I would prefer to have a meeting probably here if at all possible and discuss some of the issues and make a better evaluation of whether I should go over there or not. My concern is my family and if at all, I would prefer to be with them.
Grant: How about a meeting in Mexico City?
Bill: No termino de entender, me dices que todos los afectados no seran involucrados.

Grant: Pero... No hay relacion entre eso y lo que estas diciendo, a no ser que haya algo que no me hayas dicho que demuestra una relacion.
Bill: Lo hay, lo hay... Dejeme solamente decir lo siguiente. Ud. me pregunto algo el otro dia y le voy a tratar de contestar de la mejor manera posible. Steve Lund en verdad vino aqui...
Grant: Correcto!
Bill: Hablamos... y tambien me llamo el Sr. Costner.
Grant: Aja!
Bill: Y lo que saque yo en conclusion despues de conversar con los dos, es que ellos estan interesados en algo mas grande. Tal vez sea solamente mi impresion, pero habia muchas preguntas relacionadas a SU organizacion.
Grant: Si, ellos... ellos estan interesados en saber si nosotros te ordenamos hacer lo que hiciste en sus organizaciones, correcto?
Bill: Creo que hay algo mas que eso, creo que hay otro asunto, especialmente en relacion a la organizacion del Sr. Lund. Lo que el me dijo en ese momento fue, que la forma que ellos lo veian, mientras yo estaba siendo supervisado, yo termine en su compania, e irrespectivamente de si fue deliberadamente o no, el tema es que hubo negligencia. Es la mejor manera en que lo puedo expresar.
Grant: Oh si, te entiendo. Oye Billy, no nos preocupa eso, y te dire por que. Ellos dicen que nosotros no les dijimos nada de ti, pero acuerdate que pusiste en tu aplicacion donde trabajabas antes. Tu les dijiste de entrada!
Bill: Si, todo eso esta bien, pero ciertas cosas pasaron mientras estuve ahi adentro.
Grant: Me dices que estas sacando la cara por nosotros, cierto? Me estas tratando de advertir, correcto?
Bill: Estoy tratando de advertirles, porque... vuelvo a mi primer pregunta. Les beneficia en algo que yo vuelva alla? De ser asi, no tengo ningun problema, Yo solo quiero que Ud. tenga en cuenta de que esto puede complicarse.
La otra pregunta es... Va a haber accion policial cuando me encuentre?
Grant: Yo... yo no se lo que AMD e Intel han hecho, okay?
Bill: Aja!
Grant: Tu sabes como estan actuando. Ellos no nos estan diciendo nada, okay? Asi que no tengo ni idea si han iniciado algo.
Grabaste esa conversacion?
Bill: Cual?
Grant: Con Lund?
Bill: Ja, ja, ja. Ah, tomare la libertad de no contestar esa pregunta! ja ja!
Grant: Si lo grabaste, traenos la copia!
Bill: ja ja ja, ya no me tienen confianza, ja ja ja
Grant: No, si confio en ti, y se que probablemente lo grabaste.
Bill: Tu dices que lo puse en la aplicacion, y todo bien, pero para el tiempo que uds. le dijeron a Intel, muchos meses pasaron y mientras tanto yo estuve ahi sin que ellos supieran.
Grant: Eso no es correcto. Nosotros les dijimos en el momento en que te dieron el trabajo.
Bill: Pero esta el asunto de preaviso... No solo para ellos, sino tambien para mi. Eso tambien salio a colacion.
Grant: Preaviso a ti? No entiendo eso.
Bill: Que a mi me dieron preaviso de una inminente investigacion, y que mi nombre lo estaban circulando.
Grant: Tu sabes que eso no es verdad. nunca te dijimos de ninguna investigacion.
Bill: Pero es verdad. Es verdad... Y me advirtieron que me tendrian un ojo encima. Y estan enojados por eso.
No se si la mejor accion es que yo vuelva, o si no seria mejor que vengan Uds. No se. Eso depende de Uds. Uds. pueden decidir venir a tener aqui y tener una reunion preliminaria, porque no quiero que las cosas salgan fuera de control y no las podamos frenar. Yo preferiria encontrarme aqui con uds, y analizar si deberia ir para alla o no. Mi mayor preocupacion es mi familia, y preferiria estar con ellos, si tengo esa opcion.
Grant: Que tal si nos encontramos en la Ciudad de Mejico?
