This is the translation of the first three pages of the first letter sent to Pepe after Nila and I left the island in January 1990. This and subsequent letters show that, unlike he claims today on TV shows, Pepe was a fanatic Fidelista. He defended the Revolution against my arguments till wee hours of the morning during our stay in Cuba in January of 1990. By the end of 1991, however, it appears that Pepe had come around and now realized that he had been a fool for defending the Revolution.
After our second trip in January of 1992, Pepe was a convinced counter-revolutionary plotting against Cuba. Yet he betrayed us. Together with Lazara, they acted on orders from their military superiors. Pepe and Lazara knew that the G2 was recording us and these two individuals never let us in on this despite that we were there trying to help their families escape. Quite the contrary! They led us to believe that the Government would notify them of any plan to record us. Believing in them, we dropped our guard.
After our third trip to Cuba in June of 1992, the Cuban Government decides to include Pepe's high school buddy Lieutenant Rolando Sarraff Trujillo (a.k.a. Roly) to round out the picture. The Cuban Government was bent on setting a trap for the CIA. What it didn't count on was that these three agents were in fact trying to defect for real. The only one to make it out would be Pepe. He was tried in absentia and sentenced to death. Lazara was detained briefly and released. Roly was arrested, tried for treason, and sentenced to 25 years. He has served approximately half of his sentence.

Defendía a la Revolución a capa y espada contra mis argumentos hasta altas horas de la madrugada. Hacia fines del 91, Pepe habia cambiado de parecer y se dio cuenta que había sido un tonto por defender a la Revolución.
Después de nuestro segundo viaje en enero de 1992, Pepe se había convertido en un contra-revolucionario que ahora conspira contra Cuba. Y sin embargo nos traicionó. Junto con Lázara actuaban a las ordenes de sus superiores militares quienes grababan nuestros encuentros, pero estos dos canallas jamas nos advirtieron de esto a pesar de que estabamos en Cuba para rescatar a sus familias. Todo lo contrario! Nos dieron a entender que el Gobierno los notificaría a ellos de una operación de monitoreo. Creyendo en ellos fue que bajamos la guardia.
Después de nuestro tercer viaje en Junio de 1992, el Gobierno Cubano decide incluir al compañero de secundaria de Pepe, el Teniente Rolando Sarraff Trujillo (alias Roly) para completar el esquema. El Gobierno Cubano estaba decidido a tenderle una trampa a la CIA. Con lo que no conto es con que estos agentes estaban tratando de escapar de verdad. El único que logró huir fue Pepe. Él fue condenado a muerte por la Revolución durante su ausencia. Lázara fue detenida brevemente y liberada. Y Roly fue arrestado, juzgado por traición a la patria, y sentenciado a 25 años de prisión. Roly ha servido aproximadamente la mitad de su condena.
